White Grapes

 

Just a brief primer course on the various white grapes used in wines. 

 

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is a regal grape used to produce a dry wine.  It is also one of the main grapes used in Champagne.

 
Chardonnay grape is grown in every wine producing region of the world.  It can adaptable to wide range of climates.  Chardonnay has a fruity aromas and flavors that range from apples to fruits. 
 

Riesling

Riesling grapes are grown in a few places France, Germany, Austria, and parts of Australia.  Germany has really put the Riesling wines on the map.  Rieslings are often light bodied, crisp, and refreshing.  They are not quite a popular as the Chardonnay.  American Rieslings are usually dry and sweet.

 

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc has some very distinctive characteristics, high in acidity with a pronounced aroma and flavor.  These wines are light to medium bodied and have a hint of fruity character such as a ripe melon, or passion fruit. 

Sauvignon Blanc are grown in parts of France, Italy, South Africa, and parts of the Americas.

 

Pinot Gris / Pinot Grigio

Pinot Gris wines can have a deeper color then most white wines.  The Italian wines are called Pinot Grigio.  These wines are medium to full bodied, usually not oaky and rather low acidity and neutral aromas.  Sometimes the aroma suggest of fruit skins, like peaches and orange rind.

Pinto Gris are one of the best selling inexpensive wines in the United States.  These grapes are also found in Chile and Australia.
